A hot work permit is a time-limited authorization for temporary work that can produce flame, heat or sparks. It confirms that the area was inspected, the required precautions were completed, and fire-watch and closeout arrangements were assigned.
Use a permit when temporary hot work cannot be avoided or moved to a properly established designated hot work area.
Fix the exact work, location, worker and shift. One permit per job per shift.
Check whether the job can be done cold or moved to a designated area first.
Walk the thirteen precautions at the worksite, marking each Yes or N/A with initials.
Assign the fire watch and set the watch and monitoring durations for this job.
The PAI and the operator sign, then the permit is posted at the work location.
Complete the watch and monitoring, make the final inspection, then close the permit.
